Creating a burning need is the process of creating a desire to accomplish a goal that is so potent inside of you, that you actually need to accomplish the goal, otherwise you will become severely depressed and perish. It is a tool that will help you to persist, it will help you to move forward, it will help you get an edge over others who don’t have a burning need, it will help you to get more power and love and ultimately, it will help you to feel excellent. So how do you create a burning need? Well here are some tools to help you out:Set an Outrageously High Goal for Yourself
This can also be setting an outrageously high life purpose for yourself. Choose a goal that you would like to accomplish so much, that you won’t stop pursuing it until you die. Choose a goal that you would spend a whole lifetime full of pain in order to accomplish it, if that’s what it took.
Find Things to Push Against
Have things to push against, use competition and compete against other people or groups of people in order to motivate you even further. You can also push against an idea, or a mindset held by certain groups of people. Fight for your right to party, but for the sake of your reputation and, god no: political correctness, you should generally keep the information about who you are pushing against to yourself.
Delay Gratification
Deprive yourself of things you want until you have achieved your goal. I do this with CD’s, DVD’s and new technology items that aren’t completely necessary. I also limit my social interaction and general entertainment until I have been productive for a certain amount of time or until a task is completed.
Imagine Success
Imagine what it will be like (and feel like) to have already achieved your goal, and then notice the contrast between where you are, and where you want to be. I like to watch a mind movie every morning that I have made with Windows Movie Maker, that includes pictures of what I want, affirmations such as “Thank You for My Children”, and all of this while one of my favorite songs is playing (Hanz Zimmer’s “Now We Are Free” from the Gladiator soundtrack). This is very motivational for me.
Surround Yourself with Encouragement
Surround yourself with encouraging people, feed your mind with encouraging information, and only allow encouraging things into your life and into your mind. I like to put up pictures in my work space of my hero’s (currently Howard Hughes, Tom Cruise and Napoleon Bonaparte). They motivate me and keep me on track. Read only encouraging books, and stop reading if you begin to feel bad or depressed when reading a book or watching a movie.
Make a Decision
Often, simply just making a decision is enough to boost you forward. When you make a decision, your mind seems to make a change and say to itself: “Oh! We’re moving ahead, this is exiting!” So whenever you feel a bit depressed or unmotivated, find out what decision you need to make. I’ve found various decisions I’ve made in my life to be very motivational, even if they were pretty small and inconsequential in the long term. Some examples are: Getting a hair cut, buying new clothes, making a change in my morning or evening ritual, deciding to read a new book or breaking off or starting a new relationship. Whatever the decision you make is, it isn’t as important as just making a decision to do something new and create change and movement in your life.
Now go out there and cultivate that burning need inside of you and make your success inevitable!
